Note from the Director of Bands

 

On behalf of the Kennesaw Mountain Band Organization, it is our pleasure to invite your band to participate in the Kennesaw Mountain Marching Invitational (KMMI). We desire to provide a sound music education experience for you and your students while at the same time, presenting an enjoyable event to all participants and spectators.

 

KMMI will be held this year on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the Kennesaw Mountain High School Mustang Stadium. The Kennesaw Mountain High School campus is located at 1898 Kennesaw-Due West Road, Kennesaw, Georgia 30152.

 

The entry fee is $100.  Please note that a refundable $500 performance bond is required of all participants per GMEA requirements. If payment for the performance bond is submitted by check, this check will be returned to you on the day of the event at the registration table.

 

Please read over the attached Band Entry and Event Information as well as the Band Entry Form and Biography carefully. If you have any questions, please contact one of us at the following number or email address. For planning purposes, we would prefer to have completed entry forms as soon as possible but have set the entry deadline for Friday, August 30, 2024.

Music Judges

 

Josh Brickey

 

 

Josh Brickey has been active in the marching arts since he was 14 years old. During his marching career, he has performed in groups such as Carolina Crown, The Bluecoats, Trinity Indoor Percussion Ensemble, and Rhythm X. In all the time that has followed, he has served in many different roles in the activity, including snare tech, battery arranger, and percussion caption head. He is currently the Percussion Caption Head at The Cavaliers and has spent every season working with Rhythm X since 2007. He is grateful to have been able to work with many groups such as The Bluecoats, Carolina Crown, The Crossmen, Centerville HS, Tarpon Springs HS, Carmel HS, William Mason HS, Kettering-Fairmont HS, Miamisburg HS, the Miami University Marching Band, Triple Crown, Cap City, and more.


He remains incredibly active in publishing battery exercises, battery etudes, full pre-made and custom shows, and more through Plus 1 Designs, the online educational resource he has co-owned and operated since 2015. He continues to publish music on other platforms, as well, including TapSpace and Music Chunks.


He is proud to be partnered with Innovative Percussion, Zildjian Cymbals, and Pearl/Adams as an educational artist.

 

Scott Brown

 

 

Scott Brown is currently the Assistant Band Director at Dickerson M.S. and Percussion Director at Walton H.S., both in Marietta, GA. Scott is Percussion Coordinator for the Music For All Summer Music Symposium Middle School Camp and Co-Director of the North Georgia Percussion Camp and Atlanta Percussion Symposium. Scott is a member of the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) International Percussion Ensemble Committee and Vice-President of the Georgia Chapter of PAS. He served for four years as Percussion Arranger and Consultant for Beatrix Drum & Bugle Corps from Hilversum, The Netherlands, winning the “High Percussion” award for Drum Corps Netherlands and Drum Corps Europe in 2010. Prior to his appointment at Walton, Scott spent 14 years with the 1998 & 2002 Bands of America Grand National Champion Lassiter High School Band and served on the instructional staffs of Spirit of Atlanta Drum & Bugle Corps, Atlanta CV Drum & Bugle Corps, CV Indoor Percussion, and the Kennesaw Mountain High School Band. In addition to the national championships, he has been fortunate to be a part of 9 BOA Regional Championships, The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (2x), the Tournament of Roses Parade (2x), the Waikiki Holiday Parade, Georgia Music Educators Association Conference (7x), Music For All National Percussion Festival (4x), and eight performances for The Midwest Clinic.

 

Mr. Brown is co-author of “Field Level – The Ultimate Band Director’s Guide to Fielding the Ultimate Marching Percussion Section” and composer of “Kumi-daiko”, both published by Row-Loff Productions. His articles on percussion pedagogy have been published in Percussive Notes, Halftime, and School Band & Orchestra magazines. He is featured on the “Snare Drummer’s Toolbox” DVD and has been featured in interviews for TV and Radio in The Netherlands, Colombia, and Malaysia. Active as a clinician, Scott has presented clinics for The Midwest Clinic, PASIC, and MEA conventions in Georgia, Texas, and Ontario, and served as a clinician and adjudicator in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Thailand, Brazil, Colombia, and Malaysia. He has also appeared on the campuses of the University of Georgia, Kennesaw State University, University of Tennessee, Middle Tennessee State University, and Point University as a Guest Lecturer/Clinician.

 

Mr. Brown received a citation for “Significant Contributions to Bands in the State of Georgia” from the Georgia Music Educator’s Association, the “Citation of Excellence” from the National Band Association (3x), the “Citation of Excellence” from the Percussive Arts Society (3x), and is included in the 2006 National Honor Roll listing of “Outstanding American Teachers”. Mr. Brown is a graduate of Western Carolina University, an alumnus of Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps, and an educational artist for Innovative Percussion, Mapex Drums, Majestic Percussion, Sabian Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, and Row-Loff Productions.

 

Koji Mori

 

 

Koji Mori serves as the Director of Orchestras at Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Georgia. Mr. Mori holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree from Columbus State University, a Masters in Music Education degree from the University of Georgia, and an Education Specialist degree with an emphasis on Curriculum and Instruction from Berry College. Prior to teaching at Harrison, Mr. Mori served as the Associate Director of Orchestras and Assistant Director of Bands at Lassiter High School in Marietta, Georgia.

 

Under Mr. Mori’s direction, the Harrison Orchestras have consistently received superior ratings from the Georgia Music Educators Association Large Group Performance Evaluations. Students from the Harrison Orchestra program are consistently represented in the GMEA District 12 Honor Orchestra, the GMEA All-State Orchestras, the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestras, the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. In addition, Mr. Mori serves as an adjudicator for Orchestra Large Group Performance Evaluations in Georgia and also remains active as an adjudicator at marching band competitions.

 

Mr. Mori has experience with Drum Corps International, having served as a conductor for the Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps in 2009 and winning the DCI World Championship title in 2008. Mr. Mori was invited to Okayama, Japan in 2016 as a guest conductor for the city’s annual “Music Party!” Music Festival.

 

During the summers, Mr. Mori is on staff with the Music for All Summer Symposium and remains active as a leadership/conducting clinician throughout the country. His professional affiliations include the American String Teachers Association, the Georgia Music Educators Association, and the National Association for Music Education. Mr. Mori resides with his lovely wife Brittany who teaches band and their sweet children Kairi and Kyler.

 

David Roth

 

 

David Roth joined the faculty at Kell High School as the Assistant Director of Bands in 2008 and was named Director of Bands in 2011. Under his direction, the Kell Wind Ensemble has performed at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, Music For All Southeastern Regional Concert Festival, GMEA State Convention, January High School Music Festival (JanFest) in Athens, GA, and the Southeastern United States Honor Band Festival at Troy University. The Kell Marching Band is also a consistent finalist and award winner in contests across the southeast. Mr. Roth is an active clinician, guest lecturer, adjudicator, and music arranger across the Southeast. His professional affiliations include Phi Beta Mu, the National Band Association, Pi Kappa Lambda, Georgia Music Educator’s Association, Music Educator’s National Conference, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Mr. Roth lives with his husband Jeff and nine-year-old son Jacob in Kennesaw, GA.

 

Greg Williams

 

 

Greg Williams (Acworth, Georgia) spent his professional career as a high school band director and fine arts department chair in the Cobb County School District, located in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. During his career, he received the National Band Association Citation of Excellence three times and was twice honored as Teacher of the Year. He served as Director of Bands at North Cobb High School in Kennesaw, Georgia for 20 years. The North Cobb Bands won many local and regional contests and were selected to perform at the GMEA in-service conference in 2006 and 2012. Williams was named the Acworth Citizen of the Year in 2016 for his many years of devotion and commitment to the community. Williams earned his Bachelor of Science and master’s degrees in Music Education from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. He was a member of the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps and the Jacksonville State University Marching Southerners, where he also served as drum major for both organizations. Williams enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf, fishing, traveling, and judging high school bands. He and his wife of 36 years, Dr. Lisa Williams, reside in Acworth, Georgia.

 

 

 

Visual Judges

 

Andria Foerch

 

 

Andria, from Atlanta, GA, has been involved with the marching arts since 1993. She is the Assistant Director of Paramount Winterguard based out of Atlanta, GA. Andria’s performance experience includes Seminole High School, The Company Colour Guard, and the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps.


Since then, Andria has gone on to teach other DCI programs such as Carolina Crown, Phantom Regiment, Santa Clara Vanguard, Bluecoats, and Crossmen. Additionally, Andria has previously been a part of Georgia State University Marching band and Winterguard programs, Phantom Regiment Winterguard, and a variety of high school programs across the U.S.


Andria has continued to be involved with the local Atlanta-based circuit for the past several years, serving as Vice President of the Executive Board. In addition to SAPA, Andria is also on the Board for WGI.


Outside of the activity, Andria works at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in the IS&T department throughout the year.


Andria enjoys spending her free time with her husband, Rick, and two dogs—Buckley and Simon, and judging high school bands.

 

Brian Kraft

 

 

Brian Kraft has spent over thirty years in the band and drum corps activities as an instructor, designer, clinician, and adjudicator. Brian began his drum corps career as a marching member of first the Glassmen and then the Madison Scouts where he aged out in 1992. Brian has taught several of Drum Corps International's top drum corps including The Santa Clara Vanguard, The Bluecoats, and The Blue Stars, who in 2008 as Visual Caption Head helped lead back into DCI World Finals after a 29-year absence. In 2012 Brian joined the staff of Carolina Crown, eventually serving as assistant caption manager, as part of the team that won the 2013 DCI World Championship as well as the John Brazale Award for high visual performance in 2012, 2013, and 2016. From 2019 to 2021 Brian served as the Visual Caption Manager of the Cavaliers. Brian was also a member and visual instructor for Star United Drum and Bugle Corps from 2007 to 2012, winning the Drum Corps Associates mini-corps division championship each of those 6 years. In 2010 Brian was named Star United Member of the Year.


Brian has also been active as a visual and marching instructor for high school band programs across the Midwest and Southeast, where he has worked with many of the region’s best marching band programs including Beechwood High School, Milford High School, Rockwood Summit High School, Blue Springs High School and Kennesaw Mountain High School. Most notably Brian was the visual coordinator for the William Mason High School Band from 2006 to 2016 and 2018 to 2021. During that time, Mason was a 10-time Mid-States Band Association Open Class Champion, a 7-time Bands of America Regional Champion, and from 2011 to 2016 and 2018-2021 a Bands of America Grand National finalist, having placed as high as 3rd in the nation in 2016. Brian is also a sought-after drill designer. As Kraftydrilldesigns, he writes drills for band programs across the country. Brian is also active as an adjudicator and currently serves as the judge coordinator for the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association.


Outside the marching activity, Brian enjoyed much success as a young composer, having studied with award-winning composer Philip Koplow at Northern Kentucky University, and has had many works performed by ensembles at NKU and around Greater Cincinnati. In April of 2005 Brian was selected as one of two composers to have his composition (Margaret, set to the award-winning poem of the same name by J.K. Long) performed at Margaret Garner: In Music, Art, and Words, an event jointly held by The Cincinnati Opera and The NKU Freedom Studies Department.


While teaching together at the Blue Stars, Brian met his awesome wife Angie, a drum corps veteran herself who marched mellophone in the legendary 1991 DCI Champion Star of Indiana. Brian and Angie reside in Orlando, Florida with their two dogs, Freya and Nymeria.

 

Dave McCarthy

 

 

Dave McCarthy is a native of Revere, Massachusetts, and began his marching career with the 27th Lancers Drum and Bugle Corps and was then a four-year member of The Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps. As a member of the Cadets, he was part of both the DCI World Championship and the High Percussion Award. Upon aging out, Dave taught the Boston Crusaders and The Marauders Drum and Bugle Corps. Over the years he has worked with and consulted for high school band programs in Massachusetts, Florida, Texas, and Georgia.

 

Dave is currently a visual judge for the Winter Guard International (WGI) Percussion Division. In addition to his adjudication role with WGI, Dave has judged nationally for many circuits including, SCPA, MAPS, SCGC, SAPA, IPA, FFCC, SFWGA, and GIPA. In addition to the indoor judging, Dave judges nationally for a variety of marching band circuits and marching band invitationals.

 

From 1995 to 2001 Dave was part of the design team for King Philip Regional High School Indoor Percussion Ensemble. King Philip was a finalist in the WGI Scholastic World Class each year including the 2000 WGI PSW Gold medalist. From 1997 to 2006 and from 2011 to 2019, Dave served as the Marching Caption Head for the two-time (1998 and 2002) BOA Grand National Champion Lassiter High School Marching Band of Marietta, Georgia.

 

Rick Subel

 

 

Rick Subel is the director and designer of Paramount Winterguard of Atlanta, GA, the WGI Independent World Class colorguard he founded in 2011. He has also been the artistic director of the Georgia State University Colorguard since 2012.

 

In the DCI world, Rick has most recently designed and choreographed for the Santa Clara Vanguard, where he has spent the last six seasons. Having assisted in a choreographic role in 2013, Rick is now once again working with Carolina Crown.

 

Rick began his life in the pageantry arts in 1992, in the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County. After graduating from high school, he joined the Emerald Marquis Winterguard in 1995, where he performed for five seasons. He also spent two seasons in the colorguard of the Blue Devils, and one season with the Brass Theatre (Star of Indiana/”Blast”).

 

Rick has designed and choreographed for many prestigious independent and scholastic colorguard programs including the Emerald Marquis, Blessed Sacrament, Juxtaposition, The Academy (UK), Chimeras, The Knights (UCF), Phantom Regiment Winterguard, Seminole High School, Miamisburg High School, Kennesaw Mountain High School, Kell High School, Greater Johnstown High School, Lassiter High School, Westfield High School, Harrison High School, South Forsyth High School, and River Ridge High School. Rick has also choreographed and designed for many successful drum corps including the East Coast Jazz, The Cadets, Magic of Orlando, the Crossmen, the Bluecoats, and Phantom Regiment. In addition, he has choreographed and taught many successful drum corps colorguard programs including the East Coast Jazz, The Cadets, Magic of Orlando, Phantom Regiment, and Bluecoats.
